Today your child brought home two papers... one was to let you know about dressing up Monday as a 100 year old person. The other was about our 100 Day Munch. :)
There are many different websites you can visit to see ideas for dressing up. Pinterest is our favorite!! I also showed the students a slideshow from my class last year.
Dressing up is supposed to be FUN, so don't get nervous. :) ... And in case you are wondering, Mrs.Croft and I plan on dressing up!! haha
On Friday your child brought home a flyer for Jump Rope for Heart. (Unfortunately, we missed the Kick Off Assembly because of our Zoo Field Trip.) If you have any questions, let us know and we will do our best to answer them!
Chimney Lakes participates in the Jump Rope for Heart event sponsored by the American Heart Association. The actual event will not take place until February 12, but NOW is the time to start practicing jumping rope and collecting donations!!
All the donations go to further research on Cardiovascular Disease and Treatments. So please sign your child up to join the TEAM and then advertise!! You can download an app on your phone, then advertise on Facebook, Twitter, send emails to family and so many other different modes of communication!
Your child will earn badges for their donations. They will also earn a lanyard and different Scare Squad Characters for the different donation amounts. You can see the Scare Squad Characters in the Youtube video below. ooh if your child earns a combined $50.00 donation they get a Jump Rope for Heart t-shirt to wear to the event and they get to go to the Glow In the DARK Dance Party!!. (I just earned mine!! So I'll be sporting it on Monday, Feb.12!!) If your child earns a combined $75.00 donation they get to slime Coach Reed or Ms.Pomeroy. As if it couldn't get any better... If your child earns a combined $100.00 donations they get to slime Mr.Hill or Mr.Walker. To slime our Principal, Mrs.Metz- your child needs to earn a combined $150.00 worth of donations!!!
Thinking ahead~ on the day of the event, the students will be participating in different jump rope stations. A few of the stations offered last year: jump roping, Chinese jump roping, jumping songs, jumping with hoola-hoops. The kids all had a blast!!
The students were so excited today to find out who our Mystery Reader was. Hopefully your child told you when they got home. But just in case they didn't... it was Principal Metz!! Mrs.Metz took time out of her busy schedule to read Froggy's First Kiss. She asked the students if they had predictions about how the book would end since we hadn't read the book yet in class. The students were hilarious with their answers!! My favorite and the cutest was that they thought by the end of hte book Froggy would be married. haha The author doesn't say how old Froggy is but he is WAY TOO YOUNG for marriage. haha
I almost forgot another cute part! After Mrs.Metz left our room, we made Thank You cards. I didn't take any pictures of what was inside the student cards. But we shared them in class and I promise they will make Mrs.Metz heart MELT!! They were so adorable.
Enjoy the slideshow and let everyone know how great Mrs. Metz is!! Not every principal takes the time to go into the classes and get to know the students. Especially a class with 38 energized Kindergarteners. And today THEY WERE ENERGIZED!!! haha
So I'll be the first to admit that these are not the clearest pictures.. but the students loved this field trip so much!! They heard information about Native Americans that we read in class. They were able to jump up out of their seats and see the actors run around the large room. And a few of the actors even stopped and talked to the students!
So this is going to be a GREAT Week!! We have literacy activities daily and we have TWO FIELD TRIPS!! haha (Deep breaths everybody! haha)
We have resources on Monday and Thursday, Tuesday we go to the JCA to learn more about Native Americans. Then on Friday we are off to the ZOO! Please see the note we wrote about the Zoo on the Conduct Sheet. Your child does not need any money!! ooh I almost forgot the best part... Wednesday we are having a Mystery Reader! (We'll be sure to take pictures and post them on the blog.)
Make sure to wear BLUE for both Field Trips and on Friday Zoey in sending in Fun Friday Snacks.
MATH
We are continuing our lessons on more, less and enough. Due to the craziness of field trips this week we will be combining a few lessons and skipping over the ones that the class has mastered. :)
Here's a video we watch in class. You can use it to practice one more and I'm adding in the one less video so the students can practice that too!
READING
For Literacy Week we chose the book Froggy's First Kiss. (It's Mrs.Croft's favorite!!) We will be discussing the vocabulary in the book and and using picture clues to figure out what is going on in the book. On Wednesday, our Mystery Reader will read it to the class. We will also be creating a snowman character to match a character from the book. :) We'll be using them to decorate our door that Mrs.Conner covered for us with blue paper.
Here is a youtube reading of the book.
SIGHT WORDS/ SAXON/ READING SKILLS
Our words for the week are: do, been, your & little. Continue to practice Sight Words!! Students are expected to read 60 this quarter.
Saxon is continuing to teach us coding rules. The students have been WAITING to code with a macron and it's coming. Here is a youtube video you can watch that shows how "Magic e" makes the vowel go from being a short sound (we code this with a breve) to a long sound (we code these with a macron over the vowel and a slash through the e to show that it's silent).
Our blends this week are: /fr/ and /gl/ Here are the slideshows we will watch in class. Our focus is on hearing the blends at the beginning of words and then we work into hearing them in the middle and ends of words throughout writing.
As if we didn't have enough... (haha) we're also throwing in the -ad Word Family. This allows us to practice substituting beginning sound and work on rhyming. (I found this Jack Hartmann video on line and I thought I'd give it a try. )
**We will not get to uppercase letter writing this week. PLEASE practice that at home!!**
WRITING
With everything going on this week, students will be adding/ editing their past journal entries.
On Friday Mrs. Croft and I ordered our t-shirts for Play Day. :) We have only had two orders come across out desk, so we hope everyone is ordering online! We don't want to be the only ones wearing Kelly Green Swag Shirts. haha
(There is a small fee for ordering online. I'm not sure if it's per item or complete order... so be careful. If you need another order form to order through school, let us know and we'll send another home. )
Yesterday Ameerah joined the Six-Year-Old Club and the class was able to celebrate!! They all enjoyed cupcakes, juice and received a birthday souvenir.
So Mrs.Croft is a little superstitious and thinks the Jags won because we all wore Jags Gear... I don't know about that, but I know the kids were the CUTEST JAGS FANS!!
We have another busy four day week!! You can find the Resources listed on our weekly conduct sheet and the monthly calendar. :) Wednesday- ALL MONEY and PERMISSION SLIPS for the Zoo must be turned in. We are unable to accept any late papers.
Friday is Stuffed Animal Day, but because the Jags beat the Saints last week... we are including Jags clothing AGAIN! We have a few students joining the 6-Year-Old Club this week: Ameerah joins on Jan.16. Then Tahlia and Zoey both join on Jan.20.
MATH
We'll be revisiting the strategies we learned in the beginning of the year (circular, scattered and linear configurations). We will be mastering number formations 6-9. Our focus this week is, "Are there enough?" We will complete numerous hands on activities so see if we have enough, or too little or too much! Our vocabulary will be more, less, same, equal, etc.
Practice this at home by having your child set the table. Give them one less fork or one more plate and see how they respond to this problem.
READING
We will be learning about the Native Americans and comparing their way of life to ours today. (This is in preparation for a FREE SURPRISE FIELD TRIP to the JCA!! Permission slips will be going home soon. ) A few of the tribes we will discuss are Lakota Sioux, Wampanog and Lenape. We will discuss their shelter and clothing, how they get food and what they play with.
Here is a introduction to Native Americans with the alphabet. **We will not be testing on this content, but instead using it to help us practice Compare and Contrast.
SIGHT WORDS/ SAXON/ READING SKILLS
Our Sight Words for the Week are part, time, how & or.
Saxon is still coding words and helping us practice reading CVC words. In class we are discussing ending sounds and changing beginning sounds to make new words for word families. Then we are working on coming up with our own rhyming words for a given word. (Fake words or as we like to say "Dr.Seuss Words" will lower your child's rhyming grade. Ex. rake, bake, zake. Zake will only receive half a point.)
The blends we are focusing on this week are cr and gr. Practice them so that your child begins to use them in their writing!
WRITING
We are still working on writing with a partner and we will be discussing lengthening our sentences. Instead of writing I like cake. We will add a flavor to the cake. Add whether it's a birthday cake, oce cream cake, etc.
We are in the third quarter and wanted to make you all aware of our Quarterly Expectations. We did print this paper for all of you, however it will be going home in the Report Card envelope.
Today your child brought home a Play Day T-Shirt paper. Our P.E. Teachers Coach Reed and Ms.Pomeroy are very excited to see everyone in a SWAG shirt supporting CLE! So make sure to order one for your child and if you plan on Volunteering... order one for yourself too! The color for Kindergarten is GREEN. (I believe a dark green.)
There are two ways to order a shirt: Fill out the form that was sent home and return it to school or you can ORDER ONLINE at http://CHIMNEYLAKES18.ITEMORDER.COM.
The sale will only be open until January 29, so don't wait and ORDER TODAY!! :) If you have any questions let us know and we will do our best to get the correct information.
So... we are pretty late posting these pictures, but they were too cute that we HAD to POST THEM! :) Here are the pictures we took before break from Holidays Around the World and there is even a few party pictures too.
Thank to everyone that sent in items and the parents that volunteered. Without all of your support, we would not have been able to pull off the best three days of the school year!
Hope everyone had a great Winter Break. We both enjoyed having two weeks off and we did our best to relax and forget all about school work! haha
We have Resources all this week! (So I made a mistake on the Resource Schedule. I have to double check everything and probably even make a new January Calendar.) On Friday we are celebrating the Jacksonville Jaguars SCHOOL WIDE!! Our Principal, Mrs.Metz has informed the school she wants to see Jacksonville Pride and we don't want to disappoint!! So wear your shirt and hats, maybe even your Jaguar socks! Jourdan will be bringing in Fun Friday Snacks for the class. :)
MATH
We are finishing up our module on Measurement. The students did great today during our review for Friday's test!! They remembered all of the vocabulary and a few even remembered our "No No Words!!" ~ big and little. haha Our Test will be on Friday.
Here are two great video's using the vocabulary we use in class!
READING
We are comparing and contrasting The Gingerbread Man and The Gingerbread Girl. Our focus is getting the students to discuss the books! We want them to compare/contrast the main characters emotions throughout the story, the people/ animals they meet, how the story ends, etc.
Here is a fun Gingerbread Man video that focuses on action words... VERBS! (We branch out with vocabulary anytime we can!haha )
SIGHT WORDS/SAXON/BLENDS AND MORE!!
During third quarter we do A LOT with Reading Skills!! Our Sight words are: we, was, for, come. Saxon is reviewing beginning sounds, rhyming and focusing on ending, Our blends this week are ch- and cl-. Then we will be working on segmenting any given word... this is just chopping up a word into it's sounds. We do this daily in writing!
Here are the blend slideshows. Enjoy!
WRITING
We are reviewing all the rules we have for writing sentences and we are REALLY focusing on writing all the sounds we hear in words. The students will be writing with partners to gain writing stamina and confidence! Our goal is for the students to be able to read each others writing and write notes to each other. (It's so much fun!!)
