Progress Reports are GOING HOME 9/26/17

Image result for progress report clip art

Tomorrow, September 26 your child will be bringing home their First Quarter Progress Report. I printed the grades on blue paper and the detailed check off sheet on white.
PLEASE return the bottom of the blue paper and check off if you would like to schedule a Conference. Conferences are based off of Behavior and Academic need, if your child is not struggling, I reserve the right to meet with the Parents of the children that are first. Thank  you for understanding!!
The grades and detailed check off sheet are for you to keep. In case you forgot or did not attend Open House, your child will only be tested at Report Card time on the items they did not master.

**Conferences can be in person or over the phone. :)**

Chuck E Cheese Night!!

This Thursday, Chimney Lakes will be having a School Fundraising Night at Chuck E Cheese!! I know everyone is busy, however please think about stopping by and supporting the school.  (I hope to stop by after Art Club. :) )
The event is at the Chuck E Cheese on Youngerman Circle (6065 Youngerman Circle). It goes from 3:00p.m.-9:00p.m. And most important... 15% of all the sales during that time go to Chimney Lakes!!
** In the past students have signed their name to a large poster board and then PTA hangs it up in the Cheetah Cafe area. Make sure to look for a poster board or any PTA members for something similar to it. :) **

Week of Sept.25

Last week was good... but this week is going to be even better!! :)
Image result for favorite color clipart
We have a busy week filled with Resources, an Early Release Day on Wednesday and a Library visit from Mrs.Noah Thomas on Thursday. (It's the rescheduled date from when we missed her over the Hurricane Break.) Our Resources are MONDAY- Media, TUESDAY- P.E., WEDNESDAY- Art, THURSDAY- Music and FRIDAY- P.E. Friday is also Favorite Color Day!! Wear as much of your favorite color as possible, but don't forget your sneakers for P.E. :) Catalia is bringing in Fun Friday Snacks for the Class.
And... on Tuesday Brendon is joining the 6-Year-Old-Club! Make sure to tell him HAPPY BIRTHDAY when you see him. :)

MATH
The students are doing great in Math!. Continue to practice counting groups and asking your child to color (or hold if using pieces) parts of the group. These two part directions are extremely important for our future lessons! Also, practice writing and recognizing numbers. I noticed quite a few backwards numbers last week.
This week we will play a missing numbers game called "BEEP!" all week using a number line. Let me quickly try to explain the game so that you can play it with your child.  (The number line can go 0-20 and 20-0, so practice both. Currently ours is 0-5 and 5-0.)Showcase a number line and cover up one of the numbers with a piece of paper. The number that is covered you will say beep when pointing at. Ex. 0, 1, beep 3, 4, 5. The missing number is 2. Another Ex. 5, 4, 3, 2, beep, 0. The missing number is 1.
**On Thursday the students will take a Mid-Module test that goes over everything we've learned thus far in Module 1.

WRITING
We are still working on characters and settings. If you notice your child's drawings lack details- tell them they are missing details and ask them what they need to draw. If they don't know, then give them specifics. :) I noticed a lot of missing necks, noses and ears on characters. The students do a great job telling me details for specific settings, now we just have to get it on paper. :)
Then work on telling stories about the pictures they draw. Together in class we are writing simple sentences using the sight words and color words we know. For Ex. the playground picture had the words I like to play. The beach picture had the words I can swim (swim was spelled sim. haha It may be strange to you, but the students only write what they know and hear. And well, we haven't learned about blends or digraphs yet!)

SAXON/ SIGHT WORDS
We are discussing letter Hh. Make sure your child makes the letter sound like it sounds in the video. Quite a few students say "huh" and I can't accept that as correct.
**If there is a particular letter sound your child is having trouble with, check out the other Jack Hartmann videos! :) They are the best!!

We are learning about the breve! The students are doing great at repeating the rule~ Vowels followed by a consonant get a breve and the vowel makes the short sound.  (*We haven't learned about long sounds, however the students know that vowels make two sounds each.) Also, since we are coding words, we are also using our sounds to figure out the words. :) Currently Saxon is only coding words that have the vowel o. I want to challenge the students that know the other vowel sounds and I have been using all the vowels when we practice.
Here is a Youtube video that uses all the short vowel sounds, however it doesn't put a breve above the vowels. It only has them in a red font.

Our Sight Words for the week are blue, yellow, me & no. Practice having your child read them off the slideshow below.

READING
Last week the students enjoyed the fable The Lion and the Mouse. Well they are sure to LOVE listening to the fables; The Dog and His Reflection & The Hare and the Tortoise!! To read your child either fable click on the title above, they are both linked to Google Docs.
We are discussing the characters, settings, the lesson the fable teaches them and then discussing the events in the story. I model retelling the events in the order that they happened using the words beginning, middle and end. After I model, I call on multiple students to retell the story.
**On Friday the students will take a End of  Module test that goes over everything we've read in the Module. All the nursery rhymes and the fable The Lion and the Mouse
Example questions that WILL be on the test: What is Little Miss Muffet scared of? What pictures shows what happens at the beginning of The Lion and the Mouse? Which picture shows the meaning of the word "gnaws?" Where do Jack and Jill go to fetch a pail of water?

Dads Take Your Child to School Day!!

Wednesday is National, Dads Take Your Child to School Day. I hope many of you are able to participate!! I informed the students I would be down near the Art Room double doors to take pictures of the students from our class being dropped off by Dad. (This means, for me to take your pictures you will need to get out of the car and walk over to the doors with your child. ) If you aren't able to find me, or would rather send in your own picture of Dad taking the kids to school- please do!

I'll compile all the pictures I receive into a slideshow after school on Wednesday. :)

ooh the District's Webpage mentions that if you post pictures on social media, make sure to tag them with #FLDadsAtSchool

Sports Day

The students looked great in their Sports shirts and Jersey's!! They told each other all day, "You look so nice!"  They really like to give each other compliments. :) It's the sweetest!!

Enjoy the pictures! And don't forget next week's Spirit Day!!

Book It with Pizza Hut!!

Image result for book it program from pizza hit

This year our class is participating in Pizza Hut's reading program Book It! to promote reading. :)  Your child has many opportunities from now until March (or when we run out of mini-certificates) to earn a FREE Personal Pan Pizza just for reading!!
To earn a mini-certificate you will want to read with your child at home and log the books on our classroom Book Log. When the book log is returned your child will still receive the Treasure Box toy like they are used to... but they will also receive the mini-certificate. Below you will see two pictures, one is of the front of the mini-certificate and the other is of the back. :) ooh I want to stress that the mini-certificate expires 30 days after the date it was earned, so make sure to not forget about them.

NOTE: I will always fill out the mini-certificate before sending it home. If your child brings one home that is not filled out, please know they did not earn it from me.

You can see from the Book It! poster that 4 people in class already earner a mini-certificate this week. Congrats goes out to Brendon, Keith, Miranda and Samantha!!Great job reading Guys!!
If you would like to learn about about this program visit by going to http://www.bookitprogram.com/default.asp

Fun with Sunglasses

Yesterday was a great day!! The students were so happy to see each other and they remembered all the classroom rules. I LOVED IT!! :)
It'd been awhile since I took pictures of them. So while they worked on their detailed drawings, I took pictures of them. They were able to choose one pair of silly glasses. I tried getting everyone to wear the Buccaneers football glasses.., but they LOVED the green ones and minions ones so much!! So lot chose those. :)

Enjoy the slideshow!

Week of Sept 18

I hope everyone weathered the storm safely and is doing well.  I am fine and ready to return to school! However I need to be honest and tell you I don't bring my laptop home during breaks. Hurricane breaks are no exception... So I'm not able to do a regular weekly post and explain what we are doing. Ummmm, thats because I'm not exactly sure. Sorry, but it's the truth! (I wouldn't lie to all of you!)

Here is what I do know:
* We are going to continue testing and classwork for Progress Reports grades.
* The students are going to go to Centers so that I can complete the 1on1 Testing. (This is how most testing in Kindergarten is done. It's time consuming, but it helps ensure that the students do the best job possible!!)
* We are going to have FUN!! I'm sure the students have all missed each other and we need to establish the "Classroom Family" feeling again.

The Resources for the week are MONDAY-Art w/Ms.Schmidt. (This will be the students first time going to Art and having Ms.Schmidt as the teacher.) TUESDAY &WEDNESDAY-Computer Lab and FRIDAY-Media. Also, Friday is Sports Day. Make sure to dress and support your favorite team or sport. Go Bucs!! :) Makayla will be brining in Fun Friday Snacks for the whole class!!

**I'm not sure if the Compuer Carts will get passed out, so make sure to get your child on i-ready Math and Reading at home this week! Remember the districts goal is 45 minutes in both every week.**

i-Ready Usage Charts

Image result for i-ready
I am starting i-Ready Usage Charts in the classroom. :)  At the beginning of every week, I will check the students usage time in Reading and Math. The students who have met the 45 minute requirement will earn a Treasure Box and an X on the chart. When the whole row is filled in with X's, your child will earn lunch in the classroom with me!

Here is a picture of the Charts hanging in our classroom library.

Last week Lucas and Caleya met the requirement in Reading. :) Go guys!!!
No one met the requirement in Math. So keep working at it!

Week of Sept 5

Image result for patriotic moving clipart
It may be a four day week, but we are going to be busy learning as if it was a LONG ONE!! :) If you haven't checked out the post on Center Groups, please do. It'll give your child a heads up on who is in their group.
Our Resources for the week are~ Tuesday- ART, Wednesday- MUSIC and Thursday- P.E. (Make sure your child wears sneakers or they may have to sit out during certain party of P.E. for their safety.) Friday is Patriotic Day. Wear as much red, white and blue as possible!! Brendon is bringing in Fun Friday Snacks for the whole class. :)

MATH
This week we are doing more group counting. The students will be counting groups in different types of configurations~ lines, arrays, circular or scattered. Sometimes students have trouble with this concept because they are only used to counting groups in an array. So make sure to practice at home!!  Also, if your child is unable to count the group in their head- MAKE THEM use their pointer finger and count the objects. 1-1 correspondence fixes simple counting mistakes. :)
We will also be discussing "Hidden Partners/ Part of a Group." This is a beginning stage to decomposing numbers. It allows the students to see the whole group, but also a small part of the group.
Here is a short Youtube video for counting groups practice.

WRITING
We are continuing to practice drawing detailed people. The students are getting better every day!! We will discuss different settings we can draw for our people and the clothing to match each setting. The beach~ bathing suits, a snowball fight~ jackets, pants and gloves, their bedroom~ pajamas, etc. Together we will draw and then we will write simple I like or I am at sentences to match the pictures.
Here is a detailed setting video for a house and it's front yard. There is no talking, just simple background music and childhood songs. It allows your child to see that drawing takes time and there are LOTS of things to draw on the house and around it. Plus it's a reminder that everything is NOT the same color. There are a ton of different colors all around!

SAXON/ SIGHT WORDS
Saxon will review how the alphabet is made up of 26 letters, vowels and consonants. We will review all the letters and sounds. Make sure to practice at home so your child can join THE LETTER CLUB & THE SOUND CLUB!! We will focus on the letter Ff and discuss rhyming.
Below is a ton of  Youtube videos and the sight word slideshow!

READING
We will be enjoying a few more Nursery Rhymes and we will end the week with a Fable. :) The Nursery Rhymes are Hickory, Dickory Dock;  Diddle, Diddle Dumpling;  Little Bo Peep;  Little Boy Blue;  Baa, Baa Black Sheep and Humpty Dumpty. Our Fable is The Lion and the Mouse. If you want to read it to your child or check it out yourself CLICK HERE. Also, our standard is asking and answering questions. Here are the ones I've listed for the fable. I divided them by level= LOW: What does the characters? Which one learns a lesson? MODERATE: What happened at the beginning? At the end? How did the lion change? HIGH: Explain what real life lions and mice are like. Why do you think the mouse was willing to help the lion? Why do you think the lion decided to not eat the mouse at the beginning of the story?

SCIENCE
Since we do not have a Resource on Friday, I decided to dedicate some time to Science!! We will discuss the Five Senses and work in our Science Journals.
Here is a catchy Youtube video from Mr.R. He also has individual ones for each of the Five Senses. Check them out!!

Center Groups

Image result for center group clipart
These are the Center Groups for the first quarter of the school year. Your child will be in this group for Reading and Math Centers. Talk with your child about their group shape and who else is in their group. This will help ease the transition from knowing their Table Group to knowing their Center Group. :)
For those of you wondering how I split up the groups... Let me explain, there are boys and girls in each group. There are quiet kids and chatty kids. There are shy kids and confident kids. And all the besties are SPLIT apart too! haha I believe the mixture of students in each group will be great for learning!!

Sunglasses Day

Sunglasses Day was great! The students loved wearing them at their tables, the carpet and during Art time. However they were sad, because we didn't get to wear them outside during recess. :( So next week, please allow your child to bring their glasses once to recess.

Enjoy the slideshow!!
Make sure to check out the dance videos from Indoor Recess at the end of this post. Watching the students dance around is too cute!!
