We had a busy Friday on Feb 16!! Not only did we get all of our lessons in, we were able to celebrate Dental Health with Ms.Barbara.
For those of you that didn't get to see your child's goodie bag... Ms. Barbara is a dental hygienist from the offices of Dr. Weaver and Dr. Stratton. She brought everyone a teeth pamphlet, a new brush, toothpaste and dental floss. You can check out their website by clicking HERE.
On Monday we will have a Fundraiser Kick-Off Assembly! Make sure to check out the blog for more information and check out your child's backpack for the big envelope of information.
On Wednesday we have our Library Field Trip to Webb Wesconnet Library~ this is the library that Mrs.Noah Thomas works at, however she will not be the one doing Child's Story Time. Your child will be checking out a book using their Lunch Tag. You can choose to return the book to any library location or return it to school and we will drop it off at the library. :)
On Friday it is JEANS DAY!! We hope to see ALL of the students participate in this Fun Friday Activity. Zacari will be bringing in Fun Friday Snacks for the Class.
MATH
Please make sure to be practicing number bonds. We have been working on the different parts for making numbers 5, 6 and 7. The students are slowly getting it... and with your practice it'll all sink in!
Here is an example of the Rainbow layout for number bonds and equations. Each color represents a different way to make the number 10.
READING
We are still working on retelling a story in the order the events happen. Last week's test proved to be too hard for many of the students... So PLEASE make sure to watch the youtube video and review the events with your child. Also, practice asking them questions using the words~ beginning, ending, before and after. Here are examples:
What happened at the beginning of the story?
What event happened at the end?
What happened before the animals were in the hardware store?
What happened after the animals all had a bath and complained?
SIGHT WORDS/ SAXON/ BLENDS/ WORD FAMILIES and MORE
We are doing a lot of reading skills testing this week!! The students that did not master these skills at Progress Reports will be tested again. The skills are: ending sounds of pictures, rhyming words, adding/substituting beginning sounds and reading a Level 1A book (this book allows them to use all of the decoding strategies that Saxon has taught, along with the reading/ sight word strategies we have taught.)
Here are the Sight Words for the week. PLUS remember that this quarter your child is expected to read 60 Words. **The students that complete this expectation will enjoy a Sight Word Picnic with Mrs.Croft and I in the school courtyard. :)
Saxon is continuing to practice the c or k spelling rule, along with finding digraph ck and having the students underline the two letters together. Make sure to review all the Saxon papers that get sent home with your child.
WRITING
We are still working on the Friendly Letters for the teachers at school. We don't get a lot of time for writing, due to all the reading skills... so it's taking some time to finish these.
Here's to another GREAT week in Kindergarten!! We have a resource every day and on Friday, Mrs. Noah Thomas will be coming in for our monthly Library Lesson. :) Plus Friday is SUNGLASSES DAY.
MATH
We are continuing on with number bonds. Make sure to review the problem sets that go home with your child. We need everyone to understand the parts (partners) and the whole, so that addition and subtraction go smoothly. The number bonds and number sentences we are working on right now in class are making the number 5, 6, and 7. In class we used pictures, songs, hula hoops (as number bonds), white boards, and more. Please continue practicing at home with your child. This will help with their fluency and set a strong foundation fro addition and subtraction. Remember decomposing the number 5 is apart of the quarter 3 expectations.
We will be enjoying the book Duck on a Bike. This is a cute story that takes the reader on a bike ride with lots of different animals. We will be taking a retelling test on Friday. So watch this video with your child!
SAXON/ BLENDS/ WORD FAMILIES and MORE...
Saxon is reviewing the different ways to code and it's touching on diagraph 'ck'.They are teaching the students that ck and are besties and make the /k/ sound together ONE TIME.
We didn't get to the /dr/ blend enough last week, so I chose to revisit it. Check out last week's weekly post to view the slideshow.
Our word family is the -ed family. Make sure to view it with your child and practice the short e sound. A lot of students have trouble producing this sound correctly.
WRITING
We are still working on writing friendly letters. Make sure to check out the song from last week's weekly post. The song is very catchy!
Although it rained on Monday... nothing got us down!! The students still managed to have a great time celebrating Healthy Hearts! :) Even Mrs.Croft and I stayed to celebrate, along with take LOTS of pictures. haha
We want to say thank you to everyone that donated to this great cause and enjoy the show!
As you can see from the clip art above, we have a GREAT week planned in Kindergarten!!
We will begin our week with Monday's Jump Rope for Heart Event. Parents are welcome to come and watch the event. The current plan is to have some events inside and some outside. If it rains however, we will follow a rainy day plan. (So cross your fingers the rain stays away!! Our event time is 12:00-12:45.) Wednesday is an Early Release Day, along with Valentine's Day!! Make sure to check out the Valentine post if you have any questions. Then on Friday we have a Dental Health Presentation at 9:00 and it's Sports Day. Make sure to rep your favorite sport or team!
**There is no school on Monday, February 19.**
MATH
We are working hard on number bonds and reading addition math problems. Make sure to review the problem sets that are sent home with your child. (For those of you that are not familiar with a number bond- it is the beginning stage of addition. It allows the students to see two parts that come together to equal a whole group. **The whole is not always on the left like it is in the clip art picture. The number bond can be turned and the whole can be on the right side.**
Here is a fun addition video to get the students excited about Addition!! Enjoy!!
READING
This week we will be reading a story for International Day~ The Egyptian Cinderella by Shirley Climo. We will use this book to compare with the Duval Reads version of Cinderella and then we will practice retelling the events of the story in the order that they occur. Then to celebrate the reading of this great book... we will make Egyptian Necklaces. (Make sure to check back for some pictures of the beautiful necklaces!!)
For those of you that aren't familiar with the story, make sure to check out a Youtube reading of the book.
SAXON, SIGHT WORDS, BLENDS, WORD FAMILIES AND MORE!!
This week Saxon focuses on the short e sound. The students have difficulty producing the sound in isolation and it becomes difficult for them to read CVC words that have a short e. So please review the work that comes home!
Also, make sure to practice substituting the beginning sound of a word. You can see the process in the word family video below.
WRITING
This week we are learning about friendly letter writing. We will discuss the parts of a friendly letter and how we really need to use our sight words and the correct letters that match the letter sounds we make, so that our friend can read the message we are trying to send them.
Here is a cute friendly letter set up video and then the Youtube video for the story Dear Mr.Blueberry.
We wanted to remind everyone that participating in writing Valentine Cards and making a container/box to hold the cards is not mandatory. However, all of the students will be bringing cards home. :) Here are a few examples of containers we found online.
We also wanted to remind that you can send special treats/ goodie bags in. Wednesday is an Early Release Day and our main goal will be passing out the valentines!! It takes awhile when you have 39 students. haha But we are up for the challenge!!
In case you misplaced the list that was stapled to last week's homework. Here is the list of all the students names. :)
We hope everyone went home with stories about the 100th day!! It was a busy jam packed day full of fun. And to think we began the excitement last Friday by making 100 day Superheroes. haha
I won't ruin the slideshow with a bunch of words. I'd rather you press PLAY and enjoy the slideshow!! :)
Hat Day is always super cute!! The students love wearing their hats in the classroom and throughout the school. They even make the other teachers and students smile!!
Hope the slideshow brings a smile to all of your faces. :)
Is anyone else in shock as much as we are? It's hard to believe we have spent 100 days with your babies!! :)
Well this week is a SUPER fun and busy week. Monday our day is focused 100% on the 100th day. We have lots of fun counting activities planned and we hope to be teaching "old people!!" haha We'll be sure to take picture of the 100 year old students.
Our Resources for the week are listed on the monthly calendar and the weekly conduct sheet. One thing we would like to mention is PLEASE make sure your child wears sneakers on days they have P.E. and make sure on Monday, February 12 they are wearing sneakers for Jump Rope for Heart. This week Makayla will be joining the 6 year-old-club and on Friday we are celebrating SOCKS DAY!! Shoes will be coming off and the students will be giggling! Also, Friday Sophia will be bringing in Fun Friday Snacks.
MATH
We will be reviewing our Math test on More, Less and Enough. We will be comparing measurement attributes. Then we will focus on Math skills~ addition & subtraction within 5 and number writing. We are taking our number writing test this week, so make sure your child is practicing!
READING
We are listening to stories about Kings and Queens! The students have been great giving prior knowledge they have about Royals due to Disney and Pixar movies they've watched. They have doe great listening to the vocabulary and using picture clues to help explain what the words mean. This week we listen to versions of Princess and the Pea, Cinderella and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. (Click on the title to read Cinderella or Snow White to your child.)
On Friday we will be taking a smiley face/ sad face test about Kings and Queens. This is our first time taking a version of a True and False test. We are confident the students will do great!!
SAXON, SIGHT WORDS, BLENDS, WORD FAMILIES and MORE!!
Saxon introduced the C/K rule and the students are enjoying figuring out which letter to use based off of the rule. It's great!! Make sure to check out the Saxon papers that go home, a few list the rule on them.
Our Sight words for the week are-
We are working on these blends-
Our word family is the -am family. Check out the Jack Hartmann video and get some practice in with your child!
PLUS don't forget to work on ending sounds and rhyming. We;ve noticed issues with ending sounds do to students continually giving beginning sounds of words. Also, uppercase letter writing. Practice so that your child does great!!
WRITING
We will be completing a writing grade this week for Progress Reports. Make sure your child is able to use their sight words and sounds with ease. They will be expected to draw a picture and write a sentence that matches it. Remind them that they can look at their word wall in the classroom to find the correct spellings of sight words and figure out letters that match the sounds they make.
